Remarkably located on the hillsides of the commune of Capian which overlook the Garonne, the Château de La Chèze is a property in one piece of 30 hectares, of which 10 hectares are currently planted with vines.
The story
There is certain proof of the presence of vines in the estate from 1868 in the book Bordeaux et ses vins, published by Feret, where La Chèze appears with 15 barrels of red and 10 barrels of white. “In 1997, the year I was 3 years old, my parents wanted to acquire a small property, the ideal way to reconcile the passion of an oenologist father who wanted to make wine and the desire to settle in the countryside. They then fell under the spell, in Capian, of this beautiful 16th century noble house nestled in the middle of a remarkable 30-hectare site. Aware of the potential of this property, they then made the risky and audacious bet to buy it and persuaded the bankers to accompany them in this project. Since that time, we tirelessly renovate the house, arrange the cellars, restructure the vineyard,... we maintain the meadows and woods in order to preserve the biodiversity of this very beautiful natural site placed in a hunting reserve. I have always liked working outdoors, driving agricultural equipment from a very young age, and participating in the work of the cellar. It is therefore quite naturally that I followed studies in viticulture-oenology supplemented by numerous internships. Today, I share the adventure with my parents and am proud to contribute to perfecting the quality of our products and to energizing the commercial part. - Benoît Rontein, son of Jean-François

A passionate owner
Bathed in wine since childhood, Jean-François first had several properties in the north of the appellation and a trading business north of Gradignan. He then undertook studies in oenology and took over an oenology laboratory in Créon 30 years ago. It was his client at the time who wanted to sell this property, he seized this opportunity directly and bought Château La Chèze. Jean-François Rontein is passionate, he loves what he does and all that entails. Since he moved in, he has seen winemaking techniques change. According to him, the best techniques are the old ones. They are made according to the rules of the art with modern means today. He also became an ambassador for the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux by becoming a member of the Conntablie de Guyenne.
